Create Multibootable USB Drives with Ease: A Guide to XBoot
XBoot is a free and user-friendly utility for Windows that allows you to create bootable USB drives containing multiple operating systems (ISOs) and other live environments. This makes it a valuable tool for tasks like:
- Installing different operating systems on a computer without needing multiple discs or DVDs.
- Running live versions of Linux distributions for testing or troubleshooting purposes without permanent installation.
- Booting various recovery tools for diagnosing and fixing system issues.
Before You Begin:
- Download XBoot: Obtain the latest version of XBoot from a trusted source. Exercise caution when downloading from unofficial websites.
- Prepare a USB drive: Ensure you have a USB drive with enough storage capacity to accommodate the ISOs and additional files you plan to include.
- Using a USB drive with good read/write speeds is recommended.
- Backup your USB drive: XBoot will erase all data on the chosen USB drive during the creation process. Back up any important files beforehand.
Using XBoot:
- Launch XBoot: Run the downloaded XBoot executable file.
- Select the creation method: XBoot offers two primary methods for creating bootable USB drives:
- Create Multiboot USB: This is the recommended option for creating a USB drive with multiple bootable ISOs.
- Create ISO: Use this option if you only want to create a bootable USB drive for a single ISO file.
Creating a Multiboot USB Drive:
- Choose the USB drive: Select the USB drive you want to use from the dropdown menu. Double-check to ensure it’s the correct drive.
- Add ISO files: Click the “Add ISO” button and browse to the location of your desired ISO files (operating systems, live environments, etc.). You can add multiple ISOs to create a multiboot drive.
- Bootloader selection (optional): XBoot offers a choice between GRUB4DOS and Syslinux as the boot loader for your multiboot USB drive. The default selection (GRUB4DOS) usually works well. If you encounter issues, you can try Syslinux.
- Click the “Start” button to initiate the creation process. XBoot will format the USB drive and copy the necessary files. This process might take some time depending on the size of the ISO files and the speed of your USB drive.
Using Your Multiboot USB Drive:
Boot your computer from the USB drive: The process for booting from a USB drive varies depending on your computer’s manufacturer and
BIOS/UEFI settings. Typically, you’ll need to press a specific key combination (like F10, F12, or Del) during startup to access the boot menu and select the USB drive.
Bootloader selection: If you created a multiboot USB drive, XBoot’s bootloader (GRUB4DOS by default) will display a menu listing the available operating systems or live environments you added. Choose the one you want to boot.
